About Us

Zanshin Karate-Do was founded in 2008 by black belts Gerard Walsh, Liam Darcy, Keith Walsh and Proinsias Ó Fearghail. We started off in Portarlington Community Centre, which is run to this day by Senseis Gerry and Keith Walsh. In 2010, Senseis Liam and Proinsias moved to Kinnegad GAA Centre to open a second dojo. In 2011, we were joined by Sensei Paul Thackaberry.

We teach traditional Shotokan Karate basics and kata, and practice light, semi and close-quarter hard contact (seniors only!) sparring, along with bag and pad work for fitness, conditioning and the development of correct technique. We teach weapons skills and kata bunkai to our advanced students.
We are affiliated to Renshukan Karate-Do Association, headed by Sensei Brett Halliday and to the Irish Karate Federation Commission, an all-styles sport Karate organization following World Karate Federation rules. We are also affiliated to Shotokan Karate-Do of United Nations under Sensei Gerry Breeze and Sensei Colin Putt
We welcome interaction with all Martial Artists who honour the traditional virtues of spirit, effort and respect.
Come and try a class - you'll enjoy it!
